Why Everyone Young Adult Should Participate in Global Learning Initiatives
I was 20 years old when I traveled to a different country to provide service to those in need. It was a mission trip with my church. I lived in Chile for 1 year. It was an amazing experience. It changed my whole life. It helped me to broaden my cultural understanding and appreciation. It helped me to be more humble. I believe that every young adult should prioritize participating in a similar experience, whether it be through a study abroad program, an international language program, or a religious mission.
Many people prioritize education in the traditional sense. It is important to go to high school and it is important to go to college. Though I would argue that participating in a global learning initiative is just as important, and VITAL for personal growth and cultural understanding. There really is no other way to truly understand other cultures than going to that country, living in it, and seeing it with your own eyes.
The world is huge. There are so many places to see and experience. Yet, there are so many people who live their whole lives without ever leaving their home country. Some take vacations, but only stay for a week or two. Staying at a 5 star resort isn't really becoming immersed in the culture either. It's different when you are working alongside other people from that country. It is different to learn how to speak their language so you can really communicate with them. It is different to have lunch or dinner inside their homes. Serving them and learning to love them will change you. These things can all be achieved through various programs that are offered.
I would invite every young adult to consider saving up their money to be able to immerse themselves in a culture for at least 3-4 months. It is an amazing experience that is truly life changing. It will help you in all aspects of your lives. I know it because I lived it and I am currently reaping the benefits of it.
